Artist Statement
My work balances abstraction and abstract figurative painting, aiming to express the complexity of the human experience. Using mediums like oil paints, acrylics, and pastels, I create pieces that blend spontaneity with intention.
For my figurative works, I start by closing my eyes and letting my subconscious guide charcoal marks on the canvas. When I open my eyes, I find figures within these marks and develop them further with lyrical brushstrokes. I intentionally leave the original charcoal lines visible, as they add depth and rawness to the narrative. By preserving much of the canvas's surface, I allow these figures to unfold and extend across the composition. This process allows me to explore themes of identity and memory, drawing from my own introspection and personal growth.
Texture is key in my non-figurative works. I layer paint, adding and subtracting until the piece reaches its intended expression. Often, I begin on the floor, pouring paint and waiting for each layer to dry. When the canvas is upright, I determine its completeness. This physical engagement with the medium, from pouring to scraping, mirrors the push and pull of life's challenges and resolutions. The layers of paint sometimes dense, sometimes delicate are a testament to resilience and the beauty of transformation.
Through my paintings, I aim to reflect the multifaceted nature of the human experience, inviting viewers to explore the layers of meaning within each piece. My work is a dialogue between the visible and invisible, encouraging a deeper connection with the complexities of life and emotion.
